While the ship undertook surveys of the Islands Darwin was free to explore the East Falklands.

Darwin described the Magellanic Penguin in his field notebooks.
He wrote " this bird is commonly called the jackass penguin, from it's habit, while on shore, of throwing it's head backwards, and making a loud noise, very like the braying of an ass ".

He predicted it's demise when the Islands became more inhabited by farmers.
